Long Beach Waterfront Warriors 5k Race 2010

The Long Beach Waterfront Warriors organization, a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting wounded, ill and injured soldiers and their families, will hold a 5K Race and Welcome Parade in honor of the military families when they are visiting Long Beach July 24 through 29. The 5K race will take place on Sunday, July 25 at 9AM on Riverside Blvd. boardwalk. Early Registration is $20, day of race $25.00. Awards will be presented to first three male and female winners in various age categories.

Later that day, the City of Long Beach will hold a Welcome Parade for the soldiers. The parade steps off at Ohio and Beech Street at 3:30PM, runs along Beech Street and disperses at the Long Beach Catholic Regional School parking lot. Everyone is invited to the parade so be sure to bring friends and family to cheer on the service men and women who have fought and are fighting for our freedom!

Following the parade, a barbecue will be held for the families and their guests at LBCRS. A $10.00 entrance fee will be charged for anyone who would like to attend the barbecue (on a first come/first serve basis) with all proceeds going directly to support the soldiers and their needs throughout the year.

Plans for 2010

This year, the goal of the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors is to bring 30 families to Long Beach from Walter Reed Hospital and other locations, and to expand the length of the visit by one day.

A 5k race will draw people from all over. Full day trip into the city, along with sports activities on the beach.

To date, nearly $100,000 has been raised and over $80,000 so far has been used to fund not only our 2009 event, but also to help with many immediate needs of our veterans. As our committee and board are comprised entirely of volunteers, and with the generosity of many of our local residents and businesses, our goal is to have 95% of all donations go directly to soldiers and veterans in need and their families.

We have been honored to also help organizations such as the Northport and St. Albans Veterans Hospitals. During the holidays, we helped with the living expenses of a terminally ill Vietnam veteran. As part of our Holidays for Heroes campaign, and with the help of local school children and community volunteers, we sent over 200 care packages overseas. Donations were made to families that helped brighten what, for some, was their first holiday home. We gave the Northport Veterans Hospital a complete entertainment center, which can be used both indoors and outdoors and were told by the hospital's recreational therapist that this will aid in the soldiers' recovery. One of our 2009 Alumnae, a disabled soldier, was presented with a laptop computer, which helped with her education. The family of a Walter Reed soldier was able to afford travel and lodging and to visit their loved one at the hospital because of the help of the Waterfront Warriors. A veteran was given support in obtaining a private evaluation to aid in his disability case. With the determined effort of our committee and sponsors, the majority of the 2009 travel expenses were provided by the Waterfront Warriors.

Last year the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors hosted 16 family of veterans as guests in the homes of local residents.

The Long Beach Waterfront Warriors would like to thank the residents of the City of Long Beach for the outpouring of support to the inaugural visit of the Waterfront Warriors to the City of Long Beach.

2009 Waterfront Warriors' events included a fishing trip, restaurant night, babysitting, a trip to New York City to World Trade Center site, as well as the Marine Unit of the New York City Fire Dept.
