Long Beach, NY VFW
June Blast-Off
May 5th to May 8th Ed Grant, LB Waterfront Warriors Co-Chair City Council member John McLaughlin and myself visited with wounded servicemen at Walter Reed Hospital in Wash D.C. We met with heads of the Events Dept to continue arrangements for hosting some 25 residents & families this summer from 24-29 July. We intend to return this month with LBWW committee members charged with providing medical services. Anyone interested in volunteering in some capacity should contact me at 431-5245 or Ed at 477-4339.
The Long Beach Waterfront Warriors next fundraiser will be held at The Inn Sunday July 18 4-7 PM, $50.00 at door; open bar, food, many valuable auction items. I was proud of the turnout for Memorial Day parade to honor the holiday and our Grand Marshall, Long Beach resident and VFW member SSGT Alfred Palmieri. We also had a fine turnout for the Memorial Mass for Veterans at Saint Ignatius. The Northport VA Hospital had a Large Screen Movie night on the 25th of May at 6 PM. The screen (16' x 9' open air inflatable) and projector & speakers were donated by our LB Waterfront Warriors to the Recreation Therapy Service for our hospitalized Veterans. Every Tuesday through the summer will be movie night. Monday 14 June is Flag Day. Ceremonies begin at 1:30 PM at Veterans Park, Magnolia & Bay. Please attend if you can. Tues Sept 14 is the VFW annual golf outing at Lido. See Tom Mattson at the Post any Thursday or Saturday to reserve a 4-some or sponsor a hole. Donations are $125, hole sponsor $50, and of course are tax-deductible. Welcome to new VFW member Navy Combat Vet John Leddy. Our newsletter is now available on line at: http://www.lbwaterfrontwarriors.org/. Finally, as this is my last newsletter as your Commander, I would like to thank all who lent their support to our efforts, and review some of the contributions I think our Post has made during my tenure to fulfill our mission: 2 years of > 100% membership; one of only 2 Nassau posts to achieve minimum requirements of NY State VFW; establishment of annual blood drive; integral part of LB Waterfront Warriors' efforts to bring wounded soldiers to our city by the sea; participating in Nassau County Vets Standowns; volunteering & donating to the vets at Northport VA for various programs: Winter Wonderland, Wellness, Olympics, Harvest Festival, annual BBQ, & Christmas Party, and currently their weekly Night at the Movies. These endeavors have been a great pleasure for me, and I will continue to participate in these events, as they are the reasons we exist. They define our mission. June Dates to Remember God Bless Our Troops & God Bless America
